Dear Fellow Alums,
I hope this email finds you very well. I am always exited to meet and talk with alumni in New York, especially when the conversation is about Boston. I really did not know anything about the Olde Towne until I left it. And now, I find every excuse to connect with it while I'm in New York.
It is especially exciting when BLS comes to us as it did last weekend for the Charles Mingus High School Festival and Competition, where the BLS Big Band took home the award for Best Big Band. That is a great way to start the year for BLS in NYC.
As the snow melts and we look forward to the spring, there are two BLSA-NY events on the horizon. The first will be for recent alumni (defined as BLS grads who are currently college students in the NYC area). This event is biannual and free to the young attendees through the funding of members of BLSA-NY. It usually consists of light food and casual conversation.
The second event will be our main spring event which will hopefully be attended by the Head Master and the President of BLSA. This is open to everyone and the best opportunity to meet local alums and catch up on what's going on today at BLS.
Your help will keep this chapter vibrant.
There are two pressing needs. The first seems to be the most difficult and constantly in demand: space. We need event spaces which are the magic mix of affordable and elegant . Too much of the money from our fall and spring events goes to paying for the event space. It would benefit alma mater greatly if we could consistently find event spaces with lower rental costs. If you know of restaurants with back rooms or second floors which are available let me know. Maybe there's an event space in your office building or apartment building we could rent through you. Any new info at all would be very appreciated.
The second need is more easily accomplished. We need volunteers to make phone calls to area alums to encourage attendance at our events. Local phone campaigns have been shown to dramatically improve turnout and thus raise more money. It is also a fun way to connect with a group of people with whom you already share a common bond. If you have time to make even five calls, please let me know.
As you are aware, BLS continues successfully only with the constant support of alumni like you.
If you are interested in helping with the chapter in any way please let me know. Besides the above, some other immediate needs are:
- $25 Donations for the Recent Alumni Event
- Hosts for local, casual events (especially in the outer boroughs)
- Blog writers and social ,media experts
- Ideas for museum or tour events.
Thank you for staying involved with Boston Latin School. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Chris Wertz '90
Chairman BLSA-NY
